“Sensei.” Roun bowed as he exited the small beach-side dojo, putting back on his socks and putting on his rollerblades over them, as he checked his bag one more time. Roun sighed as he shifted all the padding for his rollerblades around in his bag. He didn’t even know why his mother insisted that he carried them around, it wasn’t like he wore the foolishness anyway, they were merely a formality to get her off his back. Sadly, she knew this, and still insisted that he carried them around. Roun sighed again at the illogic, it was better if he just accepted it… trying to understand her would just give him a headache.
As he continued to fiddle with the contents of his backpack, he moved the gear to the side, and did his best to stuff the fifteen inch blade, his kodachi from class, into the small sports bag. With some effort, he managed to get everything to fit, allowing him to put the bag onto his back as he stood up and balanced on his blades. Once everything was set, he adjusted his sunglasses and moved off, racing out of the small parking lot and across the street, weaving between the traffic as he made it across the street onto the other side of the road. The speed he picked up would have sent him over the metal railing that separated the coastal road and the actual ocean, forcing Roun into a jump as he grinded on the rails. The sudden change in momentum was enough to off balance Roun, but he was slightly more skilled than others in this department and quickly shifted his weight to regain his balance. He continued down the lengthly rail, hopping off at the end to avoid a massive brick wall, skating on the pavement as he did his best to dodge the pedestrians. None of the people managed to catch Roun attention as he blew past them, his brain only registering them as obstructions, rather than real people, allowing him full concentration in the task of not running through them. This was until his cell phone rang. He picked up the small Nokia and put it to his ears, it was Victoria, a friend of his. As Roun cleared the massive wall, he hopped back onto the rail, grinding for another few feet before he felt an odd tremor that shook the phone from his hand. The tremor, being in the small tropical island, was a shock to everyone around, as earthquakes in this area were simply unheard of and served to create quite a panic in the area.
The sudden shake was also too much for Roun’s balance, and quickly sent him flying into the ocean below. He hit the sea back first, having spun in mid air to take off his back and toss it back upwards, hoping that it would make it over the rail, so that he could avoid water damage to the sensitive electronic equipment inside. Roun hit the water and went under; waiting until his downward momentum killed itself before he made his way back to the surface. He looked around frantically, to see his bag, which had missed its target, but much to his luck, landed on some rocks that stuck out of the sea in that area. Roun breathed a sigh of relief at this, swimming over to the bag to make sure that nothing was broken. Roun smiled as he realized that everything was still intact, mostly pleased that he had avoided damage to the borrowed copy of Capcom vs SNK 2, which he was about to return to his friend Gabriel.
Roun’s attention now turned to the crowd that had gathered around his location, and he watched in particular as a single man ran around frantically, trying to get his attention for some reason or the other. Not even listening to the man, Roun just waved to the crowd and replied.
“It’s alright, I’m okay.” He laughed, slightly embarrassed by the whole event. The crowd laughed as well, but for some reason that man didn’t stop blabbering.
Actually listening to what this odd man was saying for a change, Roun realized that the man was trying to get him to retrieve a bag for him, one that probably fell into the water when the tremours struck. With a shrug, Roun agreed, diving back under the water.
Whatever there was in the bag, it was pretty heavy, and sunk to the bottom quickly, forcing Roun, ever the helpful one, to dive down to the bottom of the relatively shallow water to retrieve it. It was a simple dive, and within seconds, Roun resurfaced yet again, holding both the man’s bag, and the silver metallic “Oakley’s” that had fallen off his head during his decent.
“I got it!” Would be his last words, as the crowd scattered.
Roun looked behind him, to see a massive mouth coming towards him. Not knowing what else to do, Roun did what was instinctual… grabbing his backpack as going for his kodachi. That was the last thing he would do before the mouth closed, entrapping his bag, the bag of the odd man and Roun along with them, before Roun went unconscious.
