Darren knelt, further lengthening the stretch as sank his centre of gravity as far down as it could go he had just finished his daily workout and was warming down with a few light stretches, the warm down routine was over soon and Darren hit the showers ready to start on his day.
After the refreshingly cool water of the shower Darren slid into his long sleeved black Rocawear shirt and blue denims. Reaching for his black backpack he opened it and checked the contents on the inside, his PSP was inside within its sturdy travel case, as well as his copy of DBZ Shin Budokai 2. A bottle of water and a notebook and a pencil case were also inside and his other typical gear when heading to school.
Darren grinned, he had no school today, such were the joys of university life, however he had elected to return the PS2 he had recently borrowed from Ryan, a friend of a few years. Sliding on two, grey socks, he picked up the PS2 slim and slid it into his backpack along with the controller and headed downstairs from his bedroom.
Downstairs revealed his younger brother Alex, playing with one of their father's utility knives. It had a six inch blade and was serrated on one edge, while razor sharp on the other. Alex currently had it poised over a watermelon, which was about to meet what was sure to be a messy doom.
"Damn it Alex, you know mom will freak if you do this... and most likely blame it on me too!" Darren exclaimed as he swiped the knife from his brother's hand, folding it and dropping it in his pocket till later. Alex like most young teens, was full of energy which needed to be put to good use. Normally it was spent skateboarding, but today Alex had forgone that past time and the energy had sought more destructive outlets.
"Hey, Darren!" Alex said reaching for Darren in an attempt to retrieve the knife, "It wasn't going to do anything... just wanted to see how sharp it was." Darren deflected the incoming hand with a sweeping lower block, casually done, years of martial arts training making the maneuver as second nature as breathing to Darren.
"By dropping it into something as soft as a melon?" Darren deflecting his brother's logic as he had the grab. "By the way, I'me heading over to Bryan's and I am boarding there, on your board of course." Alex made a face at this statement but voiced no objections. That settled Darren headed to the door, pulling on the thick soled black skate shoes there and picking up the blue and black Thomas Zero board propped up by the door jam. Swinging on his back pack he slid the board between the back pack and himself so that the bad section of the backpack rested between the trucks.
It wasn't the most comfortable fit, but there was no real area for boarding in his neighbourhood with the amount of construction which took place having demolished the sidewalks and left cement all over the roads, making them more hazardous to boarders than fun. It was also no contest to the 50lb backpack he had lugged on his Duke of Edingburgh Silver qualifying hike. The 4 days in the wilderness hiking were as challenging as they were fun for Darren, who had a flare for adventure. Though they were certain things that one really missed roughing it in the wild, like showers ... and electricity.
Stepping through the door, Darren grinned to himself, the qualifier hike completed meant he was fit to recieve the silver award from the Duke of Edinburgh himself. As Darren walked across the street to to more appealing side walks he was nearly beside himself at the prospect of meeting royalty, while he was by no means British or a celebrity fan boy, it was not something that most could claim to have done.
Darren flicked the board from out behind him and dropped it to the ground, leaping on he supplemented the forward motion from his jump with a kick-push, heading for the gentle slope which took him from his neighbourhood, to the district close by where Ryan lived. As the board picked up speed, Darren rocked back on the rear sliding the foot in front back slightly and began "manualling" raising the front of the board a few inches off the ground so he was coasting on the rear wheels alone. It was at this exact moment that a tremor rocked the ground.
The sudden vibration was enough to cancel Darren's manual, the front of the board dropped hard to the ground what was worse Daren pitched forward, leaning on the lip of the board way too far, as was ineveitable the nose of the board scraped the ground, before biting and killing the boards momentum which sent Darren sommersaulting off before he landed hard on his butt and began skidding down the hill. Martial arts honed reflexes and a weird intuition caused Darren to speedily shift his head to the left and catch the board as it flipped past him and over his left shoulder.
However as he brought the board down from in front him the site that greeted him made him wonder if he had clipped his head during his involuntary sommersault, a giant gaping mouth was erupting from beneath the road ahead, surfing through tarmac and sidewalk like water. As his faculties returned Darren realised moments too late... he was sliding straight into it.
